Description
Some of the most iconic images of Cleveland are the bridges of the Cuyahoga River and the Terminal Tower. These hulking steel structures remind all who see them of the city's glorious manufacturing past. These draw bridges and the Terminal Tower still stands proud after 100 years shining bright. These draw bridges are still in use today and when the Terminal Tower was built, it was the 2nd tallest structure in the world, a testament for design and manufacturing in the industrialization era of 1900…..
The Cuyahoga name is Iroquoian meaning "crooked river." With the opening of the Cleveland to Akron section of the Ohio and Erie Canal in 1827 the Cuyahoga river became a center of commercial transportation and, as a result the Cleveland area became an industrial powerhouse in the 1800's and early 1900's. Many, many influential and notable people such as James Garfield, the 20th President of the US, John D Rockefeller, Elliott Ness, Allen Freed who coined the phrase "rock and roll", Charles F Brush who invented the arc light, Paul Newman, Drew Carey, Tim Conway, Halle Berry, Don Shula, Vernon Stouffers, the founder of Stouffers foods, The rock band "The James Gang" started in Cleveland and so many more people were born and made their fortunes in there.
Cleveland, during the Industrial Revolution in the late 1800's to the early 1900's was the largest and most influential industrialized city between New York City and Chicago. The Cleveland Flats where all of these iconic draw bridges are located was one of the largest steel producing areas in the country. The iron ore was delivered to these factories on barges that navigated these narrow waterways of this very crooked river.
Today, all the steel mills are gone and many of the old buildings are being repurposed as beautiful upscale urban living spaces, restaurants, bars and boutique shops.
