I set out from Llano Texas very early one morning to try and shoot a specific abandoned house as the sunrise popped up over the horizon. I arrived at my destination approximately at the right time and waited a bit as the light got better and the more I reviewed this shot, I just didn't like it. The light was OK but the foreground and bluebonnets just did not pop or look very good. So, I took a few shots knowing I wouldn't be thrilled with the outcome and continued on down the very rural road with no cell signal and no cars coming or going. I finally got tired of looking for anything worthwhile and decided to turn around and head back since I was now about an hour out of Llano. As I turned around, I noticed I was turning around at the entrance of what looked like an old cemetery. Out here in the middle of nowhere Texas, there are old cemetery's every 10-20 miles. This one was different. As the headlights peered into the the cemetery, I could see this one was worth exploring. I ended up wandering around this cemetery for about an hour in astonishment with all the old headstones and the bluebonnets having taken over all the ground cover. This cemetery seems to have been named from local citizens banding together of former union solders to establish a church and this cemetery. I thought about that the entire time I walked around this hallowed ground. Not only were these people far, far away from anything, they braved Indian attacks as well as hostilities from Texas who were still angry over the civil war and not sympathetic to the north or northern sympathizers. I will visit this place again as it is one of the most intriguing, mesmerizing and beautiful old cemeteries I have ever come across. The earliest marked grave here is 1891 and several are small children.
