One thing all ranchers and cowboys hold dear are their traditions, especially those that uphold the Western culture. One such tradition is that of putting their old boots up on fence posts. Although some ranchers know exactly why they put their boots on the fence, many are doing it out of a sense of tradition. Some may do it to protect the fencepost from the weather and some may do it to honor a fallen friend. According to them, some ranchers put boots on their fences and they always will. Questioning a rancher about his traditions is like questioning why we decorate an evergreen tree every December; we just do.
I spotted this ranch outside of Fredericksburg, Texas and when you cover each fence post with an old boot, that can be a lot of old boots! This one was more draped over the fencepost rather than stuck on top of it.
